Why Feeling Safe Matters During Physical Recovery

This often-overlooked factor can have profound effects on how efficiently and effectively our bodies recover.

Safety—both physical and emotional—plays a critical role in this process. When we feel safe, our body is more likely to be in a relaxed state, which optimizes the conditions for healing. This sense of safety impacts our nervous system, particularly the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary physiological functions such as heart rate and digestion. The autonomic nervous system has two main branches: the sympathetic nervous system (think "fight or flight" response) and the parasympathetic nervous system (think "rest and digest").
